چکیده

The distinction between supervised and unsupervised categorization has had a profound influence in related research. We consider a mechanism, attentional selection, possibly shared by models of supervised and unsupervised categorization. In supervised models such as the Generalized Context Model (GCM; Nosofsky, 1988), attentional selection emphasizes dimensions which are relevant for a taught classification. In a corresponding unsupervised version (the UGCM; Pothos & Bailey, 2009), attentional selection emphasizes stimulus dimensions which achieve the best separation of stimuli assigned to different categories. This approach unites the attentional mechanisms for supervised and unsupervised categorization, subject to the constraint that the assignment of stimuli to categories is exogenous in supervised categorization, but stimulus-driven in unsupervised categorization. In both cases, attentional selection is rational as it facilitates optimal category separation. We suggest that particular stimulus dimensions are attended if they make the target classification as intuitive as possible, whether categorization is supervised or unsupervised.

Unsupervised Feature Selection for High-Dimensional Non-Gaussian Data Clustering with Variational Inference

Clustering has been a subject of extensive research in data mining, pattern recognition and other areas for several decades. The main goal is to assign samples, which are typically non-Gaussian and expressed as points in highdimensional feature spaces, to one of a number of clusters. It is well-known that in such high-dimensional settings, the existence of irrelevant features generally compromi...

A Comparative Review of Selection Models in Longitudinal Continuous Response Data with Dropout

Missing values occur in studies of various disciplines such as social sciences, medicine, and economics. The missing mechanism in these studies should be investigated more carefully. In this article, some models, proposed in the literature on longitudinal data with dropout are reviewed and compared. In an applied example it is shown that the selection model of Hausman and Wise (1979, Econometri...

Predicting category intuitiveness with the rational model, the simplicity model, and the generalized context model.

Naïve observers typically perceive some groupings for a set of stimuli as more intuitive than others. The problem of predicting category intuitiveness has been historically considered the remit of models of unsupervised categorization. In contrast, this article develops a measure of category intuitiveness from one of the most widely supported models of supervised categorization, the generalized...

Fractional Order Generalized Thermoelastic Functionally Graded Solid with Variable Material Properties

In this work, a new mathematical model of thermoelasticity theory has been considered in the context of a new consideration of heat conduction with fractional order theory. A functionally graded isotropic unbounded medium is considered subjected to a periodically varying heat source in the context of space-time non-local generalization of three-phase-lag thermoelastic model and Green-Naghdi mod...

Using Context-based Statistical Models to Promote the Quality of Voice Conversion Systems

This article aims to examine methods of optimizing GMM-based voice conversion systems performance in which GMM method is introduced as the basic method for improvement of voice conversion systems performance. In the current methods, due to using a single conversion function to convert all speech units and subsequent spectral smoothing arising from statistical averaging, we will observe quality ...
